Turning Feedback Into Fuel
How to build stronger work by collaborating with your clients
Feedback can be a designer’s best friend—or worst nightmare. But at Novara, we treat client feedback as a creative tool, not a creative obstacle.
The secret is reframing feedback as collaboration. Clients aren’t trying to derail your design—they’re trying to understand how your work solves their problem. And when you meet that feedback with openness and curiosity, it often leads to better, sharper outcomes.
Start by listening without defensiveness. Avoid the temptation to jump in and explain. Instead, ask clarifying questions: “Can you say more about what felt off here?” or “What’s the goal we’re trying to hit with this change?” Often, the issue isn’t the color or layout—it’s a communication gap about the intent.
Next, translate the feedback. Clients may not speak the language of design, but they know how something feels to them. It’s your job to interpret that into creative terms that make sense.
Also, take the lead in suggesting alternatives. Don’t just do what’s asked—do what’s right. Offer different solutions that meet the feedback’s goal, even if they’re not the exact change requested. This shows that you’re not just executing—you’re partnering.
Finally, set boundaries and expectations early. Define how feedback works in the process. This ensures mutual respect and avoids endless revision loops.
The best feedback doesn’t just come from good clients. It comes from good relationships. When you treat clients as collaborators, you create not only better work—but deeper trust.
